| Fez
Within easy reach of Europe, Fez is a fascinating medieval city that charms, beguiles and captivates intrepid explorers and holiday-makers alike. Once the imperial capital, Fez is still the intellectual and cultural centre of Morocco and is an important destination for all. At its heart is the labyrinthine Medina of Fès el-Bali (Old Fès) pulsing with colour and life. Fes el-Bali is the largest living walled medieval city in existence and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The usual hum of cars and motorbikes is prevented by the Medina’s narrow streets instead the prayers from minarets can be heard mingling with the braying of donkeys and the clatter of carts. Paradoxes are everywhere; from the spiritual splendour of the University of Al-Karaouine to the ubiquitous odour of the tanneries; from the calmness of the beautiful riads to the bustle of the street peddlars and their laden donkeys: Fez is an intoxicating mix. Close to Fez are a huge array of attractions: hiking in the Atlas Mountains, visiting the ancient city of Volubilis, the enchanting town of Chefchauen in the Rif Mountains, Meknes, a spa, a Berber village or striking out into the desert or snow-capped mountains. Whether you use Fez as an intellectual retreat, a shopper’s paradise or as a hub from which to explore the region’s many other delights, you will come away knowing that there will always be more to return to. A guide is recommended on your first day in the city but please take full advantage of our own introduction to Fez, its environs and Moroccan life. |
